THE GREEK PRESIDENT AND THE FOOTBALL PLAYER

Bob Masters

Want another beer, man?” asked the tousle-haired boy holding the plastic cup filled to the brim with sudsy brew that spilled down the side.

“Sure, why not,” answered James, as he took the proffered cup and proceeded to take a gulp while he surveyed the surroundings. It was rush night at Phi Kappa Sigma, and James Marston was feeling pretty good about it. It had been his third rush party for PKS. They held several throughout the first part of the school year, waiting for the week before homecoming to accept new pledges. The competition was fierce, and James was proud to have made it this far. No hazing for him yet. Two other rushing wannabes had wound up stripped and blindfolded earlier in the evening, diapers pinned around their private parts before they were put in a car and driven to the outskirts of town. James understood that they would be dumped a few miles out and would have to make their way back before dawn, wearing only those diapers the whole way. So far he had avoided anything like that. And this was his third rush, which had to mean something.

“Can I have your attention please!” a voice rang out above the noise of the drunken fraternity party. “Attention! Phi Kappa Sigma has business to attend to tonight.” It was Richard Caxton, president of PKS house. He had a natural way of drawing attention, his handsome looks and dark hair easy on the eyes. James could not help but feel a twinge of anxiety. “We have one prospective pledge here tonight who has shown a strong desire to become a member of our noble fraternity.”

A low rumble filled the room, the loud and more than slightly drunken frat boys seeming to come instantly to some kind of almost sober attention.

“James Marston is a suitable candidate for pledge status in every way. But he still has to learn a few more things about what it means to be a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. He needs to learn proper etiquette. Let us begin the etiquette ceremony. Members, take your places!”

About fifteen frat members lined up next to each other in a single line, shoulder to shoulder. James felt suddenly alone and very much the center of attention. He didn’t realize that he was the center of attention to Richard Caxton, who was looking directly at him with an inscrutable expression on his face. He could not know that Richard was sizing him up, this pledge with his football-player physique and light blond hair. It’s this kind of boy who has popularity handed to him, Richard thought as he mentally prepared to give the instructions. They don’t have to work the crowds and schmooze with idiots to get elected president. I do, but now that I am president of this fraternity, maybe I can do something extra to take this self-assured pretty boy down a peg or two.

“The members will take off their shoes and socks.
